I am the author of PictureCast. It uses JS for a lot of transitions and visual effects. It is 100% a terrible experience on the ChromeCast. The Chromecast has one thing is good at. Displaying 1080p h.264 video content over WiFi. Every penny of the $35 went into that. If you want to do things outside of that arena, you are gonna have a bad time. Most of the work on that application went into figuring out how to make the ChromeCast not choke to death on images over 1080p in native size. Feel free to ask any questions you might have.
