Talk to guys running these. If going strong, get yourself on the map too.

It’s not research but there are some really visceral stories about yoyoing and mental health in a chapter from this book you may enjoy reading.

As someone else has mentioned if you have a small brown vinyl cape that fits the Jawa it could be worth a lot of money. The more complete you can make each character with all their original parts etc. The more they will be worth. I’m sure there are online resources that can tell you what accessories each one came from. I have a book called ‘The ultimate guide to vintage Star Wars action figures (1977-1985)’ by Mark Bellomo. Which is a good place for information. see book here I know you probably don’t want to buy a book to sell these but it’s there if you need it and I’m sure groups like this will be around to help.

Read Moby Duck if you're interested in the details along with all sorts of other interesting information.
I agree with the other posters - a basic box of Legos would be great. My brother (22 yrs old) loves Legos and bought this book: The Lego Ideas Book. It might be a little too old for a 10y.o., but it will give him ideas as he gets older. I would buy both the Legos and the book for your Angel Tree kid.
Edit: I just looked at the book description and it says the reading level is 7-11 years old. It might actually be perfect for a 10y.o.
I found this one years ago on Amazon and I bought it, it's cheap, slightly smaller then the eaglemoss one and it lights up. perfect for an office. https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Light-Up-Enterprise-Miniature/dp/0762449896/ref=sr_1_12?keywords=uss+enterprise&qid=1551668006&s=gateway&sr=8-12
On this special interview episode we sit down with author and expert toy collector Mark Bellomo to chat about the hobby, his toy collection, and his brand new book The Ultimate Guide to Vintage Transformers Action Figures. All this and much, much more on this episode of TransMissions!
A large number fall into the ocean each year. Generally, they go unreported unless large numbers (like 50+) fall off an individual ship.
One book that goes into some details of this is Moby Duck.

I just keep this on my desk, my nephew picked it out for my christmas gift last year. And I like legos approach now, said nephew is 5 and comes up with all sorts of random characters he loves the blind bag figure series, thats how I got him started, I would just give him my doubles.
According to http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Minifigure-Year-Visual-History/dp/1465414118/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388081829&sr=8-1&keywords=lego+minifigure+book - which I just got for xmas - LEGO has never produced a Green Lantern minifigure. I heard they made one special for a Comic Con, but I am not sure if that is true, or if it was an official LEGO minifigure.
