Yeah not as simplified as if they simply Transfigured themself into an animal. In that case they wouldn't even keep their human mind. The book said:

Yeah, I second the Pottermore notes. They're a lot of fun and especially good for backstory on some of my favorite characters.

Nah, Slughorn was a pureblood and definitely biased in regards to it.
His heritage is mentioned in the E-Book Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists, written by Rowling. Though it was also published on Pottermore, which doesen't exist and you can read the archieved article here. > Horace Eugene Flaccus Slughorn was born into an ancient wizarding family, the only son of doting and wealthy parents. He is also shown to believe that blood matters, as we see him assume that the outstanding Talent of people like Tom Riddle, Lily Evans and Hermione have to be the result of good herritage, and thinks it's quite noteworthy that sometimes muggleborn like Lily and Hermione are so outstanding.
Otherwise we see him value people mostly for potential benefit they bring to himself in the future, and drops those that dont meet his expectations like Neville or Belby, Hell he doesen't even bother remembering Ron's name.
This is one of the ebooks Rowling published with the most important writings she did for the old Pottermore. I don't know if this is on the Wizarding World website nowadays. The new website sucks.
Not exactly clear, but in the description of how to become an Animagi which Rowling wrote in one of her E-Books it is noted that it's always the animal that becomes your patronus.

So stuff like personality probably plays a role. Though names probably also affect things somewhat, as Sirius Black turned into a large Black Dog(Sirius himself being named after the Dog Star)

This was just $0.99, so I splurged and picked it up for my kindle. I'll read one of the self contained stories out loud to myself sometimes in the evening to work on my pronunciation. It's no Wayside School is Falling Down, but for the price I'm okay with that.
