When my daughter was born, we had something like this and she loved staring at it.
We started with only a few minutes at a time. Have you tried putting a high contrast book for him to look at? My babe like this one and it’s easy to stand up because it stretches out.
It’s Not a Box.
Seconding contrast stuff. We have this book which is way cheaper but our baby is OBSESSED. About 50% of the time she will just stare at them during diaper changes and be silent. https://www.amazon.com/Black-White-Board-Book-Hoban/dp/0061172111/ref=asc_df_0061172111_nodl?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312603973638&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2853839662282103351&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev...
Is the kids book “I’d Really Like To Eat A Child,” about an alligator that’s tired of eating bananas, wants to eat a kids but ends up getting his tummy rubbed by a little girl, the most brutally honest kids book title ever or a real life fatal accident waiting to happen?
I second reading any and all picture book to him.
As far as flash cards I recommend the following:
Black and white accordion books are good for when he is little and doing tummy time. Black & White https://www.amazon.com/dp/0061172111/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_O7joBbNXZXMQJ
My daughter loves these flash cards because you can touch and feel them too - My First Touch and Feel Picture Cards: First Words (My 1st T&F Picture Cards) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1465468137/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_c4joBb5WA84D8
We did songs a lot more than books at that age.
For books - we love "little pookie" and pretty much anything by the same author.
When LO was 3-4weeks old, we'd put the black and white book up next to him, he still loves it a year later! https://www.amazon.com/Black-White-Tana-Hoban/dp/0061172111
A friend got us one of these books when our daughter was 6mo, and we quickly got the whole set, because they are amazing. They’re just really well done, with a lot going on to appeal to all ages. Our daughter is now over 2 years, and she still pulls these off the shelf on a regular basis.
Our kid got this book as a gift at 18 months. Now at 2 years we have the whole set. They are by far her favourite books. There are a lot of layers to them, and we've used them as teaching tools for a variety of things.

No toys, no furniture, nothing that makes noise.
Books are great. There are a zillion awesome and amazing board books out there these days. There's a "block" series that our toddler looooooooves.

Dinoblock is awesome. Cute but has a lot of different dinos in it. One of my daughters favorites dinoblock
Also second the recommendation of the American Museum of Natural History series. I have the ABC Universe one. abc universe
My 2 year old's favorite is I'd really like to eat a child about a little crocodile that's tired of eating bananas.
It's a bad habit to try to break. Allow your LO to look at the books as long as they don't put them in their mouth. If she does switch it out with a different book that she can. There are indestructibles that you can get. http://www.amazon.com/Indestructibles-Baby-Faces-Amy-Pixton/dp/0761168818 Had a kid that was not corrected at daycare and he destroyed all of our books. It was very heartbreaking.
I'd LOVE this book (my daughter's Lovey is an alligator - it's like this book was written for her!) or these leg warmers for my baby.

Thank you for the contest!
It seems you should be able to get one here
This is a great book for children. It's so simple and so very cute. Yet, it teaches them so much from reading it out loud. It's a book I keep in my classroom and at home.
