chain locks are useless, get something like this or the ones like they use in hotels that have the u bar and the nob (no idea what they are called) and make sure it is amputee dwarf bondage porn i mean if you are going to go for it go for broke man...
Defense in Depth:
1) good neighborhood (sounds like this is out)
2) sturdy doors/doorjambs, multiple locks (knob, deadbolt, chain, this thing)
3) fence/fence-like shrubbery
4) bright motion-activated outdoor-lights
5) alarm system
5a) dog
6) camera system
7) firearm
We got flippers like these for all exterior doors after Kiddo (then just turned two) opened the front door and let the dog out. I 100% recommend them - they’re dead simple for adults to work, but he can’t reach them and they’re just tricky enough that he can’t pop them open with a broom handle (he’s tried).
Oh god that’s awful. Keep notes and screenshots of all the accounts in case this escalates. Be ready to get the police involved. Buy one of those locks to double lock your door.
Yep. Replacing the screws on your exterior door strike plate with longer ones, or preferably replacing with a larger reinforced strike plate will do way more good against an average burglar.
Bad solution to a solved problem.
We have two of these in our house for home defense, one for a downstairs office and one for the bedroom, and might get more. It's 1/3 of the price, takes <1 second to set, and can withstand 800lbs of force (not including the extra strength from the doorknob).
I honestly recommend anyone get one. We have firearms to defend ourselves, but, it saves a lot of moral and legal problems to just stop them from getting to us in the first place while we wait for the cops.
You cannot go wrong with an Abloy Protec or Protec2. They do not use the same pin and tumbler system that most locks do. I do not think they've ever been picked. However, it will set you back quite a bit more than a normal lock.
https://securitysnobs.com/Abloy/
The keys are more expensive too, and you will have to custom order them - you can't just get the blanks anywhere.
Even though breaking the door would leave evidence that might tie him to it, I would suggest reinforcing your door jamb anyways. Not sure about where you are, but in the US, typical deadbolt locks are not secured to the wood behind the decorative wood trim. This means that the lock has virtually no strength because that wood is easy to break.
If you can find something like this, it will come with long screws to make your lock much more secure:
https://www.amazon.com/Prime-Line-Products-10385-Accommodates-Centers/dp/B00D2K33NG/
I'm assuming you're using a deadbolt lock, but if you have a different type of lock that is secured to stronger wood, it might not apply.
We had those - kid outsmarted them.
But he couldn't outsmart a latch installed way above reach. https://www.amazon.com/Defender-Security-10827-Door-Reinforcement/dp/B00D2K367Y/ref=sr_1_13?dchild=1&keywords=childproof+front+door&qid=1611015262&sr=8-13
The fact that there are a bajillion different types of child safety latch on amazon should let you know that no, this isn't something that has just happened to you.
Maybe not legal advice, but here's an option.
You would be surprised at how easy it is to re-key a regular lock. Stop by your local hardware shop and go to the contractor's desk. Ask if they can re-key a lock and how much would it cost. I worked at a hardware store while I was in college and while it wasn't a service we publically offered, it was generally something that we could do. It wouldn't hurt to ask and it's quite cheap.
Alternatively, you can buy a cheap rekey kit for $20 bucks. There are a number of 5-15 mintue videos out there and with a steady hand, you could rekey the lock in 30 minutes.

Maybe off topic but since we are speaking on home security it kinda fits. I was a residential door installer for years. I have replaced countless doors I to people's homes. You would not believe how many doors I've seen installed with 1 inch screws. Check and replace these screws with 3 inch screws. They are usually long enough to hit the framing of the house and add strength. Also many doors do not have deadbolts so the cheapest and easiest solution to this I have found is an amazon product. Very easy to Install with a drill and feels very sturdy. It can only be locked from the inside how ever so best use is for a door in a garage or back door.

I suggest getting a lock on your door. If you cannot change your door knobs, I suggest these two items:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08YTBX3S7/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_glt_fabc_QDRJJ0T7D1RWA3GGBG59
and
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D2K367Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WLtxFbQ18SGMF
These work great if you have enough space between the door and the frame. You are supposed to router out the frame so they sit flush, but a few of my doors had enough space to avoid it.
Here's a portable door lock you could use for when "just walking in" is inappropriate.
Also, need to have that talk about "respecting ones need for some privacy" and how she wouldn't like it if you were to barge in on her while she's changing. It's pretty rough if you are so fed up as to consider doing the same to her to let her be on the receiving end 'to see how she likes being barged in on while nude'.
Be very mindful of 'staging' guns if children are ever in your home (yours, if you have children or family members). You (or your partner) are better off having a pistol on your body when around the home, in a good quality holster, than staging firearms.
I would recommend looking at a night lock or door reinforcement lock. These make your door(s) much, much harder to kick in and can be installed in ~10 minutes. https://www.amazon.com/Defender-Security-10827-Door-Reinforcement/dp/B00D2K367Y/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=door+jam+lock&qid=1611426185&sr=8-5
I bought this from amazon and followed a YouTube video to rekey it myself.
I bought a new house and didn’t want to spend $200 bucks to get my locks rekeyed. Payed $20 bucks and spent 1.5 hours on 3 locks, resulted in 3 same keys and opened all 3 locks.
My favorite Amazon home security buy is a door reinforcement lock made by Defender Security. It is super cheap buy (under $15), installs quickly with a power drill (done in less than 5 minutes), and the quality is impressive for such a small/cheap product. I highly recommend the product. Installed it at the start of the year and so far it is holding up nicely. Just have to remember to unlock it before opening the door otherwise you are getting no where
Hi OP, in college I had a similar issue with a guy who lived next door to me and “accidentally” wandered into my apartment a lot. I purchased this which is a bit easier than a door bar to take off from the inside in an emergency (but both are good options!). Five years later, I still use it in my current apartment! I hope that even with a lock, an additional measure will help you feel more comfortable. Best wishes!
I'm with you. I've used this kit from amazon for $8 to change all the locks on a house myself quite easily. They're really not as complex to change as you think.
>No knocking or anything. I was really angry at the moment so I closed the door on her arm. > >I felt so bad afterwards and apologized to her countless times. It wasn't too serious, just a bruise.
ESH. You're an asshole for that and you know it, and your mom is an asshole for not giving you your privacy. It would be best if she changed the way she behaves, but she's your mother and "not in my house" and all that shit.
You may want to consider no-install latches if this is really getting on your nerves: https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Additional-Unauthorized-Traveling-Apartment/dp/B082WQR3YM/ref=sr_1_6?_encoding=UTF8&c=ts&dchild=1&keywords=Door+Hardware+%26+Locks&qid=1595791614&s=hardware&sr=1-6&ts_id=511276
I ordered this one recently. Haven't received or installed it yet. I'm not a big amazon shopper but I figured it was likely worth the $15.
Not recommending this one specifically, but moreso this style/price point. I couldn't get the sill plate reinforcement kits because my front door has irregular spacing between the deadbolt and handle. Just trying to make it more difficult to get in, there's still other ways if they really want in (breaking the sliding glass door).
I decided that it was worth paying $160 extra to a professional and saving an hour of my time to have it done right.
Now, if you're buying an OEM rekeying kit with all the pins so you can choose the patterns yourself, then maybe. But those are almost as expensive as a locksmith, and you'll still need to have keys cut.
You can fix this in 3 simple steps
1) your husband now is the primary number for your son’s daycare
2) This latch on your door - it can be opened with one hand (I also have a trick shoulder, be it it hasn’t popped in a while)
3) a cell phone where he can text you if something is up.
This is your work. With or without him.
I purchased a kit on Amazon and did it myself. It wasn't too difficult. The kit I bought isn't available anymore. This looks similar: Prime-Line Products E 2402 Schlage Type C Re-Keying Kit, 5 Pin https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008RIDQD0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_tWGBxbH4DT832
Let me preface with saying I have never bought a Schlage Prefab Repin kit.
This one on Amazon looks good for the price.
It seems to have everything. There are few complaints in the reviews:
Schlage are a little bit more money. These are the pins I buy from CLK Supply. You can try their discount code RCLP2 and that is good for 20% off all pins most of the time.
If you need any additional help feel free to ask!
Shameless plug for /r/homedefense.
That will get you in a good place.
Kind of extreme, but you could "fix" the lock with something like this. But I would start with a conversation as others have suggested, so it isn't a total surprise when a 'rent can't open your door.
Defender Security Satin Nickel U 10827 Door Reinforcement Lock – Add Extra, High Security to your Home and Prevent Unauthorized Entry – 3” Stop, Aluminum Construction Finish https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D2K367Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_1QJ4F622CB6N6QV0K30H?_encoding=UTF8&psc=
We have these on all of our doors!
That is zero bitted. So you would have to have someone cut the key for you and add in the correct sized keypins.
If it was a standard Schllage, I would suggest this kit, but maybe you can get someone to cut your blank to match the keys in the kit. They are both Schlage depths.
On Amazon there's extra locks you can buy that help give you more security. Its called a portable door lock https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082WQR3YM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_-vwUFbFT3KKJ6
I figure at the very least, if your mom doesn't listen to a talk about boundaries, it could buy you an extra couple mins for you to LET her in. Its useful for adding extra security if your lock isn't good as well
I second this. Also if drilling a door knob hole or deal bolt holes seems daunting it's pretty easy with careful measuring and a jig. Jigs can be found at any box store or even Amazon. This one comes with the drill bit
