I'm right there with you, and so are a lot of people. I still respect him for being one to inspire young children (he's kind of the Bill Nye of this generation), but he has lost a lot of credibility in recent years.
Recently read a book - Seveneves, and I'm pretty damn sure one of the main characters is NDT.
The Atlantis Gene is the first of a 3 part series that gets more absurd and out there with every passing chapter. It's basically what would happen if Shyamalan wrote a book and attempted to include a plot twist every 3-4 chapters.
To those interested why exactly, please do yourself a HUGE favor and read this book. https://www.amazon.com/Second-After-John-Matherson-Novel-ebook/dp/B002LATV16 It has two more in the series. Best urban survival fiction story i have ever read. EMP's are fucking scary because the human nature is scary. I was recommended this book on this subreddit a while back and i thank you, whoever you are.
One Second Later by William R. Forstchen. I have a T1 son and read it before his diagnosis. Reflecting on it post-diag makes it so much scarier. https://www.amazon.com/Second-After-John-Matherson-Novel-ebook/dp/B002LATV16
Yeah, Im fully into ebooks, but the cost really is BS. I think there is some drama between publishers and amazon that always inflates the prices. Some self published authors have really cheap Ebooks (I loved this book and its sequels and they're only $3-$5 each). So there is a chance the prices may go down at some point if something changes between amazon and publishers.
I actually got into Ebooks while pirating them, so cost wasn't an issue, after awhile i got so used to the convenience of having it on my phone I couldn't go back to print. Then i had a little more spending money and decided buying them was even more convenient.
> Meanwhile they create an elaborate scenario where an eccentric billionaire kickstarts a series of successful new tech companies like a private aerospace manufacturing and transportation company, and an full electric transport manufacturing company. > > All wrapped in future hype, but in reality it's all founded by governments to bootstrap space-colonization as fast as possible.
Sounds not too different than the Neil Stephenson book SEVENEVES. Blurb on Amazon has huge spoilers, so skip it if you want to discovery the story as you read it. If you liked "The Martian" for its near future sci-fi spaceflight, you will like SEVENEVES.
There's even a character in the book that reads very much like Elon Musk.
Ha! I dont blame you. That's just an aggregator link that collects all the amazon stores into one link, otherwise I have to post a link per individual store. Here's the US one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086HWQ5Y1
The Singularity Series by William Hertling
Was barely able to put it down. If you are interested in the possibility we are headed towards a technological singularity this is great hard scifi that paints a plausible, well thought out, and very engaging path towards it and through it.
The Forward collection.
A COLLECTION OF NEW STORIES FROM
VERONICA ROTH BLAKE CROUCH N. K. JEMISIN AMOR TOWLES PAUL TREMBLAY ANDY WEIR
Six visionary writers explore the far-reaching effects of tech breakthroughs. For some, it’s the end of the world. For others, it’s just the beginning.
I have been on an EMP fiction kick. (Books about what happens after an EMP hits and we lose all electronics.) They are fun, and I learn things. I am learning things necessary to survive after something like this, and having fun doing it. No, they aren't true, but the writers tend to do their research.
I really enjoyed this one: One Second After by: William R. Forstchen
Not mind blowing, but a good read. ;)
There's a great book series called Singularity starting with Avagadro Corporation, which features an AI built to read and respond to emails that becomes sentient and escapes the lab. Should be required reading for AI developers :) https://www.amazon.com/Avogadro-Corp-Singularity-Closer-Appears-ebook/dp/B006ACIMQQ?ref_=d6k_applink_bb_dls&dplnkId=b52d1801-2532-4b08-b81e-10514d91d7ab
This is basically what daemon was about, economic stress on a broken system to force it to fail and give way to an objectively better one.

FYI:
For those wanting to bunker it out, I'm afraid bunkers just aren't going to cut it! Sorry to burst your ~~bubble~~ planet!
Essentially the entire sky is literally going to be glowing insanely bright red, radiating such intense heat that will char you within a few seconds on the surface.
And then...
Not to mention plummeting oxygen levels. Not that you would want to breathe the superheated oxygen into your lungs anyways.
Not to mention how all forests on all continents of the Earth will burn down at once--all within less than 24 hours after impact.
Not to mention countless multiple, massive tidal waves.
Not to mention insane Earthquakes in many parts, that are unprecedented and off the charts in human history...
And lots of other apocalyptic fun mayhem. It's a true miracle anything survived that impactor 65 million years ago.
Again: I seriously have no clue how anything survived that. Life finds a way I guess!
Anyways, given the profound nature of this question, OP might enjoy the awesome SciFi novel:
Seveneves (By Neal Stephenson)
Seems like there's more than a few negative reviews for the novel on Amazon, but I have to say as someone who has read a HUGE whack of SciFi novels, this one absolutely ranks in my top 10 (personally speaking).

Aparte puedes leer los libros de Shadowrun (cyberpunk puro), yo tengo varios y los he conseguido en español aquí en la internacional, universal y en Lehmann. También recomiendo los de Crimson Skies pero esos son más de Diesel Punk.
To the planet itself? Not much.
To a couple billion people in rural / 3rd world conditions? Not much.
To us in first-world, moderate-to-highly-urban environments? Utter catastrophe.
This is probably the scariest book I've ever read.
Am I allowed to suggest my own books? Maybe crazy to do this, but its only 0.99c on amazon right now 😀 The Paradise Factory is set in New York in 30 year's time where AI driven automation has had a massive impact on society. 115+ ★★★★/★ reviews if that's a way to rank it here!

So I'm a newb sci-fi author (2 novels and 3 novellas published, book 3 out next week), and this is entirely down to money. I chose to go down the indie publishing route for a variety of reasons (I had a trad offer but turned it down). So, in the indie world a book is typically $2.99 for a new author. Of that you get 70% = $2.09c gross per sale. That's for a years work. For a first novel most Indies (myself included) sell them for 99c, which at 30% = $0.29c. You need to go cheap on book 1 otherwise your sales really suffer. So 30c per sale for all the work isn't a lot. BUT if the reader likes your books, and then they read book 2, then book 3 you start to make a very very small income from each sale.
You also have to advertise etc which eats up all that extra money from the first 3-4 books, that why you get series now of ten books etc.
I'm not doing that as its too boring (for me) so I'm writing trilogies in the same world, but entirely different characters, settings etc.
So, yeah, "its just money" but without series there'd be hardly any new authors working. For reference my books take around $2k to publish due to editors, covers, etc so I'm looking at 5 years minimum to even start making a profit. I'm in it for the long term hence these up front costs, there's so much cheap cr*p out there, as has been noted here.
Hope this answer helps! 😀
(Oh and here's my 99c book 1 if you're interested, US Amazon link: THE PARADISE FACTORY
I bought full Forward collection on Amazon.com.
But if some kindle store does not support grouping, shouldn't all books be visible in the library anyway (i.e. separately)?

I keep getting the title wrong. It's 1 second after and here it is. Very realistic look into what we would think of as mundane things not working. https://www.amazon.com/Second-After-John-Matherson-Novel-ebook/dp/B002LATV16/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=One+Second+After&qid=1613963217&sr=8-1 Did you know you can look inside for free of the 1st chapter?

The Forward Series, it's free on amazon prime reading, it's a collection of several short stories - each one written by a different author. I find the series is similar to black mirror - each one involves a bit of sci-fi/technology futuristic type stuff.. fun reads.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WK7PVFT?ref_=dbs_r_series&storeType=ebooks
I wouldn't pay $1.99 each or even the $5.94 for the bundle of 6 (not good enough to offset the length to make it worth the $$$) but https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WK7PVFT

EDIT: Looking now, not seeing the $5.94 bundle, but I remember seeing it last night. *shrug*
Anyone ever read The Atlantis Gene series? It's fictional but has a lot of these theories in it about Antarctica and the global elite and ancient beings. Fun read. https://www.amazon.ca/Atlantis-Gene-Thriller-Origin-Mystery-ebook/dp/B00C2WDD5I
Anything is possible. But the "barrier" to success is no less in self-publishing than traditional publishing. People don't view SP works any differently.
In fact, it's probably harder to succeed in SP as you don't have all the resources of traditional publishing. Hence why a lot of SP novels tank because they are poorly written and produced. Very few people have the skills (or money to acquire things like editing services) to really have a shot at SP.
Also, like anything, it will take a while (years) to build a reader base, that's assuming you are really good.
But the #3 book overall in the Amazon store is self-published I believe.
With 12,000 reviews it's likely sold over a million copies. Safe to say the author has likely made millions.
In summary: Possible? Yes. Easy? No.
One Second After by William Forstchen is an important post-apoc work. There's a recent sequel, also, One Year After.
The Remaining series by DJ Molles.
I haven't actually read Pattern Recognition or Zero History, so my opinion may be worthless, but if you want something close to our reality with a hint of cyberpunk I'd recommend Daemon by Daniel Suarez
