I found these.
Boao 200 Pieces Unfinished Wood Slices Round Disc Circle Wood Pieces Wooden Cutouts Ornaments for Craft and Decoration (1 Inch) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K8B9D7S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_UYMeCb80W2MJ2
You don't even need to buy them in bulk. Most stores will have a bunch of free commons from players who are playing draft or sealed in a big box. Just grab whatever you want from there, most sets are going to have at least a few goblins, undead, and beasts.
But yeah buy a 1" hole puncher, some 1" washers from a hardware store or a 1" wooden dowel cut into smaller pieces. Or here 100 1" wooden circles. Get that, a 1 inch hole punch, and some glue.
Maybe a hardware store, or any sort of craft store. They are on Amazon too, but it’s for a pack of 50. There is even a comment about DnD in the reviews. lol

If heft is an issue, you can swap out uncut white dice for wooden cubes. I imagine you could apply the same process OP did - painting and mod-podging - and get results that feel more like a regular die.
They're cheap, too. You can get 50 blank white 16mm dice on Amazon for under $8, which works out to about sixteen cents a die.
When my wife wanted one, she couldn't find exactly what she wanted. She wanted storage for a watch a couple of nicer earrings and rings. I bought an unfinished box on Amazon. I took the time to stain it to match the bedroom furniture, felt lined the lower half, and added a thin cedar plank on the inside of the lid.
It looks awful now, since she uses it like a giant coaster on her nightstand, but it was fairly nice once upon a time.
I found it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001767QPS/
Like I said though, I wouldn't use this one again. Ideally the lid/box would have a lip so they fit together a snugger. I'm going to keep an eye out at some thrift stores and see if I can find a cheap one for next time.
Get some wooden disc's from Amazon or a craft store.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CSV14JE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_p-XVDbR27GSP7
Also get a circle punch of the same size: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013NESBKK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vaYVDbEGWXAV3
You can either print out artwork on cardstock or even use common pokemon cards to punch out the art.
Take a tiny bit of Elmer's glue, wood glue or some sticky tack, and glue the art to the wooden discs. Boom. High-quality tokens.
This is a trick used in the Roleplaying community to make tokens for their characters and NPCs without breaking the bank. ~15 dollar investment gets you like 100 tokens.
I reccomend between 1 inch and 1 1/2 inch for the size. Depends on your purposes.
Have fun!
I picked up a pack of these on Amazon the other day, and so far they work great. Easy to pick up and move, fun to mess around with. So far I've just been grabbing a fistful and numbering them ("Here are six cultists, or four troglodytes, or...") but when we get to a point with more mixed encounters I might combine with your method and start gluing faces to the faces.
What to buy:
Tutorial/Run down of how I made this tray:
I have been looking for a tutorial on DIY dice trays and couldn't find anything that replicated the look or sound of those nice dice trays like they have on Critical Role. So I made my own and hope that someone else might find this tutorial useful!
Edit: a word
For tiny sized mini bases, I use government-issued copper plated zinc discs covered in milliput carved into stone floor patterns. For 1” -4” bases, I use plywood craft circles. You can buy 200 for $10 on amazon. Boao 1 Inch Unfinished Wood Slices Round Disc Circle Wood Pieces Wooden Cutouts Ornaments for Craft and Decoration (200 Pieces) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07K8B9D7S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pSZKFbM7WV686 Larger sized wood discs are very affordable as well. I have thought about buying a tool to make bases, but the wooden discs are cheap enough that it wouldn’t be worth the effort.
I prefer the aesthetic of flat wooden bases for use with TTRPGs or skirmish war games. Other companies sell plastic bases which are more varied in shape but are also far more expensive.
Maybe you are looking for something like this: acrylic paint pens?
not sure if they will indent the clay base, but I find them to be pretty inky, so they probably won't so long as you have enough patience.
I wasn't sure if I'm allowed to post links but here it is: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07D2M6B23/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_A6BBA4TY04ND0036MA38
I'm brand new to the hobby (like literally 1 week, 3 paintings down).
You're going to need to layer your paint, so don't bother with expensive ones! I find that an initial thin coat works, and then a thick coat once dried going in the opposite direction with light pressure. Frequently check your work by flipping it over. I'm not great with keeping my lines straight but I've found the faster I draw one the cleaner it looks. I print out my reference pics in black/white for tracing and then have it pulled up on my phone for color matching and double checking lines/shading. Always mix more paint than you think you'll need, especially for important tones like skin where it'll be obvious if the shade is off half way through.
Feel free to message me for any other info/advice! I already have a ton of it lol
1 inch unfinished wood rounds are absolutely dirt cheap. You don’t have to cut them to shape and they’re sturdier than foam board too.
If you want to go with wood blocks you could just buy a pack like these: https://www.amazon.com/Wooden-Cubes-Square-Projects-Woodpecker/dp/B00DNN5HOK
And stain them yourself. It's not hard and probably pretty cheap. Glue some together for bigger creatures or buy a pack with differently-sized ones.
You would likely need those pictures though, to make them stay on the blocks, try clear tape if you don't need the paper images anymore after and what might work if you want it to be reuseable is gluing a paper clip to the block
I got some wooden tokens on Amazon and then made a template in Photoshop to drop artwork into. Then I print off a full sheet on card stock, punch them out, and glue them onto the tokens. They're relatively cheap and thick enough that I can easily pick them up without them sliding around. All of the tokens also have a number on them which helps me keep track of health and when my players tell me which they're attacking.
1" Tokens here for Small/Medium Monsters
2" Tokens for Large Monsters
I haven't had my party fight anything larger yet but I like the idea of butter/yogurt tubs for the larger enemies.
Thank you! use these paint pens. They have colour packs as well. After drawing your design on, you let it cure for 24 hours then pop it in the oven for an hour and you're good to go. :)

Yeah I just asked a friend he said he will send me the whole bestiary in token form.
I will just print it and glue it to some wooden tokens I found on amazon.

I think it would look great :)
I actually just bought one from Lucid Customs lol. I’m not OP and haven’t gone with the full build but I own a heater and suggest to anyone thinking about pulling the trigger to do so. Also, I’ve seen people mount them in ball jars. That’s a quick solution. Or there are little boxes like these online
There were a few boxes where the clasp wouldn't stay shut. I contacted Amazon and they sent replacements immediately.
Darice 9180-14 Unfinished Wood Purse Box, 7.25 by 7.25-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0016ZXXZW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_mGDEAbB3Y4H4T
I use a real wooden cigar box. It's amazing how fresh and aromatic it keeps the ground-up weed.
EDIT: similar to this one (mine was once used for cigars): https://smile.amazon.com/Darice-9180-14-Unfinished-Purse-7-25-Inch/dp/B0016ZXXZW/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1500852213&sr=8-8&keywords=cigar+box
I got it off amazon here's the link.
Darice 9180-06 Unfinished Cigar Box, 8.375"x8.125"x1.75" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001767QPS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_RbrpybZPNRKE9
I only paid $3.77 US for it and that's about all is worth. The top is flimsy and would flex and hit the magnets, so I used longer mounting screws too help support the weight.
I've been using some wooden tokens like these. I also got a small woodburning tool and a lettering set to mark them.
Grab these from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BAKWKP2/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687462&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00BNWGVDO&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0Q89N3CHZG0FFRZSZCRA
Then print your custom images on something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Avery-Sticker-Paper-Inches-53202/dp/B000XALDGM/ref=sr_1_4?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1463150290&sr=1-4&keywords=sticker+printer+paper
And you can make your own custom dice to your hearts content.
