This is what did it for me! All of history (up to about 100 years ago) in one source.

I found it in a library sale for 2$ a few years ago and bought it on a whim. I keep it in my kitchen and read it with my breakfast pretty much every day.
For what it's worth, Isaac Asimov disagreed with you.
WWII remade the world. It led directly to European countries losing or giving up their colonies, and the fallout from that caused most of the world's serious conflicts. We'll be dealing with that mess for a long time into the future.
The end of WWII kicked off the Cold War. The decline of Europe made way for the US and the Soviet Union to rise as super powers. The US never fully demobilized from WWII, and the military-industrial complex dates to WWII.
Mao's rise in China probably would have been impossible without WWII weakening the previous government.
Digital computers and atomic bombs were invented as part of the war effort.
Fascism, eugenics, and little mustaches were all pretty much ruined. They'd all previously been popular in Europe and the US.
Oh, and untold millions of people died in gas chambers, in battlefields, starved or sickened by the toll war takes on civilians, or killed in civil and international conflicts that grew directly out of WWII.
asimov's chronology of the world: the history of the big bang to modern times?
i can't claim to have read it, but my friends who have say it's pretty good.
Isaac Asimov wrote a great overview of human history. It doesn’t really read like a novel though - as it’s broken up by time frame and geography. But it’s very thorough.

For many years I was a huge fan of Asimov's fiction. About 15 years ago I started reading some of his non-fiction and fell in love with it as well.
The below three books are among a very few books that I will not lend out.
Asimov's Chronology of Science and Discovery
Asimov's Guide to the Bible: Two Volumes in One, the Old and New Testaments
