I got a bike stolen from a bike room about 10 years ago and have never trusted them since. I always keep min in my unit. I use something like this Bike Rack that leans up against the wall. It doesn't take up a lot of space and gives me a lot of peace of mind.
I feel your pain. If I were in your shoes I’d sure as hell want to bring my bike into my apartment too.
I’ve got two bikes I switch between regularly, and recently got this from Amazon. It’s right against the wall just inside my apartment, so I can hang them up and take them down easily just as I’m coming and going.
Don’t worry about hanging your bike by the rim of a wheel. Unless your frame is made out of ultra dense material from a collapsed star and weighs a ton you’ll be fine. I wouldn’t discount a pulley system with the ceiling, even if it’s tall either. Installation would certainly be a pain, but worth it once you got it done. I’ve seen some innovative setups on YouTube, you can look there for some inspiration and brainstorming. It’s also possible you could make something just to fit your needs in a DIY project. Before I bought my rack I was contemplating following some instructions online to make one myself out of $50 or so of PVC pipe or wood from a hardware store. Good luck with whatever you choose.
I have this back rack. Holds two bikes, and is sturdy and easy to mount bikes on. $30 big ones for it
I have this Delta rack and it does the job. It's cheap too and doesn't require any drilling or bolting anything to the wall.
It's not without faults. The rubber over the metal supports where it holds the bike frame are constantly sliding off or cracking. But to be fair I take my bikes off/on this rack quite a bit.
Not sure how you're storing the bike at the moment, but buying one of these racks allows you to stack two bikes vertically against the wall so they take the same footprint as one bike. Plus it makes it look neater. Just in case you want to keep the other bike :)
It’s this one. I have one myself, it’s a great rack, but the holder arms have all ripped their rubber in the two years I’ve had it. I haven’t been a fan of that, but otherwise I like it.
I used to live in a 540 square foot condo in l.a.... we had our bikes up against a wall on this...
I have a couple of these which have been great: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Delta-Cycle-Michelangelo-Gravity-Storage/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2F0NV9234UHTB&keywords=bike+gravity+stand&qid=1653500051&sprefix=Bike+gravit%2Caps%2C73&sr=8-5
They can be fixed, but I have them just leaning against the wall which has been fine. No marks on the walls, easily moved if needs be.

There are rack options like this if you really can’t drill holes in walls.
The bike needs to be moved. It's not a good place for it. I see you too are a man of haute cycling and have multiple bikes. You need this.

I've got this: Delta Cycle Michelangelo https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_895869W28WDNG5KENYR7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Currently holds a large cross bike and a 29er large frame mtb .. works great and doesn't need to be attached to the wall.

We have 1 of the 2 bike knees in our garage and love it. Leans right up against the wall. Pretty stable and zero issues with it. Might be what you need.
Me and my wife used to keep 4 bikes on a floor stand like this, in the bedroom of our 500sqft apartment in NYC.
Delta Cycle Michelangelo https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_AY1JS147BXES8R7ZAGYZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I had this 2-bike rack when I was in an apartment. It keeps the bike far enough away from the wall I wasn't worried about the grime unless the bike was wet.
I purchased this one: Delta Cycle Michelangelo https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_4S9VT9RDWWM1DE138RKD
and I’ve been pretty happy with it! Stores two roadbikes and saves up tons of space.
Easy to assemble and taking the bikes out is a breeze too
Naw I feel that! My shit bikes are indoors, and I don’t want people fucking with it. One of my apartments my last bike was stripped and was technically on my “property.” If it means something to you, clearly you’re keeping it safe.
(Side note- We mounted ours bc of a similarly small space with this tho leaning wall mount. It uses gravity to keep them up and out of the way with minimal impact to the wall. )
Would a free standing bike stand help, and then you would have off the carpet or could put a rug below? (My friends has a homemade one out of wood something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38 vertical, with two hooks)
Else maybe a sheet of acrylic from hardware store could be easy to put underneith if wet and easy to wipe clean of mud later. Maybe. If you want something to rollout occasionally, I've been using cheap yoga mats below my indoor plants, and they are water prove enough to keep the floor dry.
Its much more expensive but I use this bike rack. and slid it behind my bed in my tiny apartment. Its secure as can be, and didn't require any holes to be drilled in the walls.
If you can move your bed away from the wall, you could lean this type of a rack between your bed and the wall so the bike is hanging over your bed (does that make sense). Should be safe enough there not to be knocked over. Maybe behind a desk or a dresser is also another option.
You could just go with a gravity bike stand, and use the wall space without having to actually install anything.
I agree with bigred, though, anything that makes a bike visible above the fence line is definitely a security issue.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about these bike racks. Keep the bike locked up inside the house instead of the garage and put a security camera in the house.
Other than that, not much you can do.
I have this rack. It leans against the wall, and while it's technically intended to hang the bike by the top tube, I just tested and it works perfectly fine hanging the bike vertically.
Those lean against the wall style bike hangers work better than I expected they would. We keep both our bikes in the entryway to our apartment and they barely occupy any space.
We got this one for $50.
I carry mine up and down 3 flights of stairs, and inside we have a vertical bike rack that holds two bikes.
This off-brand 2-bike gravity rack: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ACAM38/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Holds both of my bikes securely, was very cheap, and no marks on the walls. My landlady likes it so much that after seeing mine, she has started providing them to all of her tenants with bikes.
I'm assuming the DIY solutions don't daunt you, but if you need a simpler solution, you can also find two bike hangers that just lean against the wall. These are especially handy if you really need to use a wall with inconveniently located studs.
Here is an example of what I'm talking about: http://www.amazon.com/Delta-Michelangelo-Two-Bike-Gravity-Stand/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1441070814&sr=1-3&keywords=bike+rack
I use this one it's been to three apartments now. I only screwed it down in the first one and haven't bothered to screw it down since. I put both my bikes on it and hang tools on the back side. Screwing it to the wall isn't really necessary unless you are worried about earthquakes I suppose.
For $50 you really can't beat it, considering it can hold two bikes.
I live in a very small apartment as well... Michaelangelo stand FTW!!
The shiny metal is a purchase: http://www.amazon.com/Delta-Michelangelo-Two-Bike-Gravity-Stand/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1373442187&sr=8-12
I DIY'd a painted wood board and mounted matching hooks to get the bikes as they are in the photo. It's fairly cheap and easy. If you move a lot then the setup is also very convenient because no damage is done to the wall.
you could try one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Delta-Michelangelo-Two-Bike-Gravity-Stand/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1298913663&sr=8-1
I have one, it works reasonably well. It takes some readjustment from time to time, but it holds up 1 or 2 bikes comfortably. And, no holes in the wall...perfect for a rental.
For my small apartment, I bought this off Amazon. It leans up against the wall and can be used as a bike stand for maintenance.
Edit: For $50 it's been great: amazon link
I think I'll end up getting this for my apartment, but thought I'd post this link here for anyone else interested. It's $45 on amazon.
7 is an excellent option for an apartment, but I would disagree with that article's statement of relying entirely on gravity. It includes one anchor and screw to keep it from tilting while loading/unloading.
I have a few of these Delta Gravity Bike Racks and I'm really happy with them. It does take up some wall space obviously.

Delta Cycle & Home Michelangelo... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Been using this for a few months. Nothing in the wall. Holds up an X3 and an S3
I grabbed one of these and it's been working great so far! It's been a couple of weeks and it's still standing which I think is a positive sign.
if you dont wanna worry about leaving your bike locked up outside at night, i have one of these stands in my teeny studio apartment that does the job really well for both my bike and my fiance's bike.
good luck my guy!
Delta Cycle Michelangelo. $60 on Amazon
I have a road bike I've put less than 10 miles on. It's a small Fuji Newest 4.0 2011, perfect for anyone between 5'0" and 5'4". I'll throw in this bike gravity stand, a helmet (with rear blinking lights), a U-lock and a front bike light, all for $300 OBO.
It's basically everything you need to get started other than a decent sense of balance (which I lack).
It's a bicycle stand: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38
This'll save you some room and keep them upright. https://www.amazon.com/Bike-Bicycle-Floor-Stand-Storage-Rack/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
I know of people who use the delta stand without drilling holes in the wall. Obviously you have to be a bit careful when hanging the bike and not bump it hard when walking by. https://www.amazon.com/Bike-Bicycle-Floor-Stand-Storage-Rack/dp/B000ACAM38
I've been using this for ~10 years: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ACAM38/
Im going to get ride of one bike. I have this bike floor stand that saves space, so getting rid of one of the bikes will basicaly be good. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ACAM38/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I think I am going to put the guitars in their cases. I've left them out for easier access, but I just dont play like I used too. Time to accept that I guess.
I want to keep my twin sized bed.
I looked at that but eventually decided on this with room for 2 bikes and it has worked just fine for me, had for over 3 years now
Get something like this, and store the the third bike on the ground.
I think the gravity stands are pretty nice, bonus you don't have to drill holes in the wall. https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Michelangelo-Two-Bike-Gravity-Stand/dp/B000ACAM38
Keeping them inside would be the preferable solution. Never underestimate how far people go to steal bikes. Here are a couple of small-footprint indoor storage options: bike nook or Delta Michelangelo. Keep the bikes clean and make them part of your decor. This works best when your gf is also into bikes.

Something like that but one that can take the weight?

These off Amazon.
I have one, it's ok.
This is the one that comes up the most frequently for apartment dwellers. I have a couple of friends that swear by it.
Not sure of your apartment configuration, but could it accommodate something like this?:
https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Michelangelo-Two-Bike-Gravity-Stand/dp/B000ACAM38
A spare bike can come in handy if you can swing it.
I bought this standing rack on Amazon, leans against the wall and hold 2 bikes. Haven't had any issues with it.
To avoid drilling into walls, this works pretty well. Two bikes in the footprint of one.

I got this one ~10 years ago. Still use it. Used to store 2 bikes and now it just holds 1 bike plus my helmet, gloves, locks, etc.

Think it might be this one: Delta Cycle Michelangelo https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_TYTG2BMVB7AJ4VX2H0K9
Link to stand. Security deposit-friendly. No drilling holes required haha
Bring it in the house if you can! I have this bike stand and it's great, takes up very little room and looks kind of cool:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ACAM38/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
There are some bike storage options that you can get fairly cheap online. There’s this company that makes furniture with cut outs for your bikes so it makes them almost like an accent piece https://chol1.cl
There’s also some smaller bike racks you can get online that are self standing and can hold up to 2 bikes, you’ll just have to clear out like a corner of the apartment to make room for them!
The Wirecutter likes this one: https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Michelangelo-Two-Bike-Gravity-Stand/dp/B000ACAM38/
I used one of these for awhile and it worked well: https://www.amazon.com/Cyclingdeal-Bicycle-Hanger-Parking-Storage/dp/B00811N5DE
This style seems to be popular as well: https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Cycle-Leonardo-Storage-Vertical/dp/B000FGTTEW/
Delta Cycle Michelangelo https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_wvnfFbN8PVX8B can’t recommend this strongly enough
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ACAM38/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
it may not be the most aesthetically appealing thing in the world, but for two bikes, it's the most space-saving thing i could come across. works great
I use the Delta Cycle gravity rack in my ~480 sq ft studio apartment on the only "free" wall we have. It works well and I like that I didn't have to install any hardware in the walls because we are moving at the end of the month.
Here it is:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ACAM38/
It leans against the wall, no drilling required.
I used this one for similar purpose in a small apartment. Leans against the wall, but has rubber on the contact point to keep it from making marks.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ACAM38/ref=asc_df_B000ACAM385111325/
I have two of these, it's a pretty good design: https://m.cb2.com/wood-bike-storage/s309683
You need to use drywall anchors though.
If you're not comfortable drilling into your wall, there are designs that just lean, like this:
Similar to this one
What's wrong with bringing them inside? Placing them on something like this takes them out of the way and keeps carpet clean.
Something like this freestanding rack would look good in the corner where bikes/sofa box are in the pictures
Delta Michelangelo It's been to three houses and works well for both my bikes.
I also have two bikes, and this is the solution I'm looking at, they make a few. http://www.amazon.com/Delta-Michelangelo-Two-Bike-Gravity-Stand/dp/B000ACAM38
I have a road bike I've put less than 10 miles on. It's a small Fuji Newest 4.0 2011, perfect for anyone between 5'0" and 5'4". It's a great bike, especially for beginners. I'll throw in this bike gravity stand, a helmet (with rear blinking lights), a U-lock and a front bike light, all for $300.
It's basically everything you need to get started other than a decent sense of balance (which I lack).
I use this gravity stand
my bed is pushed up against it for extra support (doesn't really need it)
