These are what I use for things like this. They don't rub off easily so the marks will stay on the figure, but they also can be removed with rubbing alcohol if you mess up.
So I would 100% go with the gundam markers, theyre great and made specifically for this. You can get a bunch of colors for cheap. Gundam Gm01 Black Fine Line & Gm02 Gray Fine Line Value Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GRKPNUE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_9PCCJPPNN9487M13BBWY These are what I use and im 5 kits in and love them. Get these and a small block eraser, like a professional artist one, theyre cheap and great. Then when you line a panel you dont have to worry about being exact, as you can run the eraser over the lining and wipe off any excess, as the eraser wont go into the panel line on its flat side.
No worries! So as for the paints, I actually just used an old brush and some cheap acrylic paints I had lying around the house that I mixed to get the right colors. Looking back on that it was nice because they were so cheap, but the finish isn't as nice as I'd like it to be because of the brush I used and I didn't let the paint properly dry between coats. If you want to go all out on the paints though, you could go for Tamiya model spray paint, but it'll cost you a bit more. But besides that, I used fine tipped Gundam markers for the panel lining and small vent areas
Just for clarification, are these markers safe to panel line with without using any top coat?
I did a quick search and most of the cracks due to panel lining seem to be from using accent.
this is a more simple panel line. The ones listed above are good, but to get into it maybe starting with these kinds are a good idea. This can be stripped with iso 91% alcohol
Hey guys, I'm trying to do detail paneling lines. I was wondering what are some recommendations of the pens that you use? And are there alternatives out there where I can go and get from my local office store? Amazon is currently have a slow shipping speed and can take up to a month before they can deliver.
If you are able to, I'd strongly recommend buying the 2 set that's on Amazon. These are made for Gunpla and are alcohol based. All you need for cleanup is either a eraser or isopropyl alcohol. They will smear if you apply a lacquer top coat though, unless you apply very thin layers.
As for the enamel wash, that is the best and most popular since it's easy to apply and gives better results compared to a panel line pen. Only downside is that you have to be very careful, as the enamel in the paint can react with the plastic Gunpla is made out of and cause it to become brittle. Usually you would have to apply a gloss top coat before you apply the wash in order to protect the plastic.
Not too expensive and very easy to use. I haven’t graduated to painting but panel lining is very simple
You should try a gundam marker.
I use the gray one for white parts and the black one for other colors.
What ever you try good luck!
Would this work then?

Or what would you (or anyone) recommend? Amazon has so many choices I wasn't sure what exactly I would need.
For panel lining pen I recommend Gundam Markers GM001 & GM002. Also, if you'd prefer, a hobby knife is a good alternative to sandpaper. It doesn't leave the sanding marks that sandpaper leaves. However, since it's a sharp knife, be careful not to cut your finger off.
I doubt it? Her face is so small it probably wouldn't really be plausible. There's always the power of Gundam markers if you really want it on there though.
but even the tips of those might not be tiny enough to do it.
Panel lining would be the first step. People usually use black but most people also use grey for lighter parts. Here's the amazon link for convenience For the Barbatos, you'll want some grey paint while you're at it, the HG Barbatos is one of those HG kits that misses a surprisingly large amount of grey color apps. Also, if you used a knife for the nubs for a flush cut, scratch at it with your nails to get rid of the white stress.
Another thing is that you'll want to work at your posing guide here's a great one for basic posing, and here's a great guide for action posing.
Hello! I've done some basic snap models before like some of the Star Wars kits, but I've never done anything with panel lining, or painting, etc.
I'm reading about spraying on coats first, then panel lining with these pens (I guess), then putting on a flat top coat.
I guess I'm interested in the Gundam: The Origin kits like this and this.
I don't think I want to tackle anything crazy like weathering, but would like to make the panels pop out and the surface non-reflective.
Can anyone recommend a gloss spray on, flat spray on, and some pens? Or do I have the process wrong?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GRKPNUE/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_glt_i_8ZKP7F9SV4W3D1QTP15X This one for Gundam panel lining and then some clear coat over that. But I would assume any small micron pen could do the trick.
You did a fine a job. Get yourself some fine tip markers and your panel lines will look a lot sharper. Make sure you get a few extra markers because the tips will get all fugged up before they run out of paint.

These are the ones I’ve been using.

I've used the GM01 and Gm02 markers for years, and I've never had an issue.
(semi-related PSA, they're on sale for $7 shipped on amazon right now, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GRKPNUE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 )
Top coat is optional, as for the lining markers Amazon sells a set of 2 (black and grey) which should be good for most builds.
Grab a set of these if you don't want to get involved with paints yet and you're good to go.
I’m a big fan of the Ultra Fine Gundam markers! Link
As others said, either a wash or a pen. A wash will look best, but then you have to clean up the excess. If you use an acrylic wash, then a soapy q-tip would do it. If you use an enamel wash, you'll need thinner to remove the excess.
Or, a Gunpla marker like this: https://www.amazon.com/Gundam-Gm01-Black-Fine-Value/dp/B00GRKPNUE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1530277258&sr=8-1&keywords=panel+lining+marker Not as good, but will work on the lines. The underside of the arm cannon however is where a wash would shine and bring it all out.
Edit: here's a great example of what panel lining can do to bring details out. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H1vctz4tzwU/Tw1gnqNOx1I/AAAAAAAAAEw/A02y8NmVDR8/s1600/head+part.jpg
the GM21 and GM02 grey and plack fine tipped gundam markers are pretty good
A handful of people use those for panel lining, but usually people use the actual lining pens, GM01 and GM02. These will work better.
Do the nippers have a one-sided blade? Unless they do, then I can't recommend cutting near the part even with a flat blade on your nippers, as mirroring blades will still stress the plastic. You should definitely not use the brush pen, use something more fine tipped, a gundam marker would do, might as well get the GM01 and GM02 value set on Amazon if you live in the US. You should also consider getting GM300 which is essentially isopropyl alcohol in Gundam Marker form, and acts as an erasure for Gundam Markers.
In that case, yeah just go for the average panel lining markers. This set is a great beginner one.
What are you looking for?
> do you have PG gundam kits also?
Sadly not, they're a bit expensive. All of my knowledge is due to extensive research and learning via internet and reviews to give advice and help others on r/gunpla.
If you want to detail kits better, panel lining is a good place to start. Panel lining is the process of lining the molded-in crevices of a part so that they pop up. Here's my example of panel lining on the kit that i'm currently building.. Notice how I lined the panels with some grey ink. I use grey ink to line the white and really light colored pieces, and black to line red pieces and darker colored pieces. These are the markers I used, and the ones I recommend to people to begin panel lining.
Karma is essentially how many upvotes you get on a subreddit. Link Karma are the upvotes you get from your threads and posts, while Comment Karma are the upvotes you get from your comments.
You chose the best kit to begin Gunpla with, and it's quite a decent first build. The posing is okay, but it's a bit unrealistic. Here's a guide! Next time, you'll want to learn how to panel line using these bad boys. Welcome to the club! ^ _ ^
Oh, those types of Gundam Markers are paint makrers, and they are okay for painting small details. However, using them to paint large surfaces isn't the best idea. These are the markers you want to use for panel lining. I also recommend this marker which can erase any mistakes you make.
There isn't a Guntank and Zaku II Revive, so i'm confused on that. I assume you are either talking about the HG Origin Char's Zaku, and the HGUC Guntank, or the HG Origin Guntank Early Type. The revive line only has 7 kits out so far.
However, the hobby is meant for anyone! The Revive line isn't really easier than other HG's, the main point of it was to bring back old HG kits that had outdated engineering. It kind spawned from the All Gundam Project.
HG's & SD's are simple enough for children to tackle. That's really the main guidance. For panel lining use these, and also buy this, the erasure helps a lot, trust me.
Thanks for the advices ! Oh and is this the GM001 and 2 markers ?
Heh, I have a RG justice too! Yeah I applied decals as I went along for that one too (but i admit i was losing my patience, too many decals for that booster lol)
It's pretty easy, easiest with gundam marker liner pens. I just suggest it here mostly since a lot of Char's red suits pop more with panel lining. http://www.amazon.com/Gundam-Gm01-Black-Fine-Value/dp/B00GRKPNUE/ref=pd_sim_21_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41jsdmux1WL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0ER4MNJWC54HKB0938GY these, very easy to use, if you mess up, just rub over with finger and try again. Some would actually recommend brown panel lining pens for red and yellow parts (http://www.amazon.com/GSI-Creos-Brown-Gundam-Marker/dp/B006B3ZHJ4/ref=pd_sim_229_15?ie=UTF8&dpID=31f%2BcI-qg1L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1PR5XRH7BGCA8SSFEW25), but that's mostly preference.
Have fun =)
I definitely like this method as opposed to having to edge regular painted models.
Currently using these Gundam markers
i don't know what your local store situation is like but here are the two basic gundam markers for panel lining on amazon:
and if you have amazon prime it does qualify for free 2 day shipping, that is a little on the pricey side because they should be around $3 each but it isn't bad and grey and black is a good place to start as brown isn't used as often (i like to use brown on the bottom of the feet to kind of make it look like they've tracked in the dirt and sometimes on yellow and red but for infinite justice i'd probably use grey or black)
i also like that posing guide and i'm glad i could help! :D
