Yeah, Sony really wanted people to commit to getting proprietary accessories.
Here's the Pulse headset. I think there was also a "gold" headset... it was black in colour, the "gold" was just the model name.
A used pair of Sony Pulse Elites could be in your price range.
I have a pair and they're awesome. They work for both systems and anything with a USB port. Great sound and an integrated mic:

Hey OP, if your monitor looked amazing but had no sound, all you had to do was buy this headset or any other usb headset for that matter. You didn't have to go out and buy a brand new video output device to solve an audio problem. You just had to plug in a USB headset into one of your ps3's usb slots.
Budget - 100-200$ CAD
Source - Just my PC.
Requirements for Isolation - Some, use at my house only.
Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No.
Preferred Type of Headphone - on/over ear?
Preferred tonal balance - Balenced.
Past headphones - I've used these for about 5 years now. I love them. The sound quality while not perfect, gets the job done. I love how you can control the volume and everything really with slides and buttons on the headset itself. However they are terribly fragile and will break after about 8 months of daily use.
Preferred Music - Electronic. Specifically Pendulum and deadmau5.
What would you like to improve on from your set-up - More detail and something new and comfy.
Thanks in advance.
I am using the Sony Pulse wireless headset. It has pretty good range and the bass vibration function is like having a mini bass kicker strapped to your head. I bought it when the DK2 came out and have been using it since for VR. Pulse Elite Edition Wireless Stereo Headset https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0087OZ5FG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Na5kxbNHAH305
The Sony Pulse Elites are great too (that were made originally for the PS3).
They work with anything that has a USB port, have sliders on the headset for game and chat volume, are super sturdy and well priced (~$100).
My only gripe is the weight but you get used to it. Also no "boom mic" so you don't look like an air traffic controller with them on, nor do you have to worry about where the mic is placed.

I have the GTA version of the Pulse Elite, and I've been told how clear I sound by a few people. Great quality headset overall, and the pulse feature is an interesting novelty. Plus, it's wireless.
If you're not too particular about it and are looking for a wireless setup, I recommend the Wireless Sony Pulse Elite headphones that were designed for the Playstation consoles. I know they're not 7.1, which is what you are looking for, but I really like mine and they work and sound great for both gaming and other applications. You also don't have a boom that comes down in front of your face which can be a nuisance at times. The pulse function, which on the surface seems like a gimmick, really adds and extra element to your overall experience. Think of it as rumble in your headset ala Dual Shock. Really great set of cans that are reasonable for the price.
U can plug in any headphone with mic into the controller so that should help if money is an issue
But I use PS3 pulse, I got it wayyyy back when it was 165 but now it's $104, it has rumble within the headphone u can feel everything and it's greattttt for music.
So your headset is wireless and the receiver needs to plug into a PS3/PS4/ or your laptop. I can't work with more than one of those at a time.
Here'e the link I used for this information: Amazon Listing
I use Sony's Pulse Elite Wireless Headset with my PS4. I have enjoyed it quite a bit; comfortable, has plenty of audio options including a slide to balance between voice and gameplay volume, and the battery life is great.
I use this: http://www.amazon.com/Edition-Wireless-Headset-PlayStation-3-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG for just about everything. Works with bluetooth or can be tethered with the supplied cord, has an adjustment for Game volume, Sound/Voice balance, and Bass.
They also sound better than the $300 Beats my son has.
I just picked up the Sony Pulse Elites (originally for the PS3). They will work with anything with a USB port from what I understand (I bought them specifically to be compatible for both my X1 and PS4, as well as PC/Mac).
They are really fantastic - the Virtual Surround Sound is great, they're comfortable (though a bit heavy) and the mic is built-in, so there's no boom to deal with.
I picked them up on sale for $99 off Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Edition-Wireless-Headset-PlayStation-3-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG
<strong>This</strong> would probably best your best choice.
Virtual surround, works with PC/Mac and confirmed to work with PS4, there is a cheaper version for around $71 on amazon again Sony, but since it doesn't say "Pulse" on the box I cannot confirm if it will work with the PS4.
The Pulse Elite works with both: http://www.amazon.com/Edition-Wireless-Headset-PlayStation-3-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1377231887&sr=8-10&keywords=PS3+headset
Any bluetooth or wired headset will work with a PC given you have the proper adapter, and most will work with the PS4.
Edit Also, thank you for posting in this thread rather than creating a new one :)
I've been pretty happy with the Pulse Elite Edition Wireless Stereo Headset.
It can be used wireless with your PS3 or computer, or wired with pretty much anything, including the DualShock 4 controller.
They will be adding wireless headset support for the PS4 "soon".
Here's the URL for the Pulse Elite (I had it handy because I was just researching it). I was debating because I was not sure it would work well with PS4, but sounds like it can be, my only thought is I'd be afraid the wireless mode would be delayed or they will release an even better headset specifically for the PS4
The Pulse Elite headset will work with both.
It will work wirelessly (with the usb dongle) on PS3 and PC. It won't work wirelessly with PS4 at launch, but they will put out an update to add compatibility. While waiting for the update, you can plug the headset into the controller with the included cable.
I have the Pulse Elite it is a bit more expensive but works on pc and mac (wireless) easily and you can use it with anything that has an audio jack (obviously wired)
I just traded these ones in for the Pulse. They are on sale for $127 at Amazon and I had Best Buy price match it. They feel much better quality wise and the Pulse feature is phenomenal. The fact that you can hook em up to any device with the audio cord is also a plus since you only have wireless as an option with the regular set. I'm very pleased with the Pulse. http://www.amazon.com/wireless-stereo-headset-PlayStation-3-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1355170965&sr=8-1&keywords=sony+pulse
The Sony Pulse Elite Edition is a godsend. I got it a little over a month ago and it is fantastic. Completely wireless. No wires what so ever. All you do is plug in the USB receiver into the PS3, turn on the headset and the TV automatically gets muted and all game sounds goes to the headset. Its great for anyone who plays with an HDMI set up like me because most headsets have to be connected via those red, white and yellow cables to receive game audio.
No, there's no audio jack, you need to use the dongle. The dongle works with my mac, but I have no idea how to jack it into phones, or tablets.
Btw, Sony is releasing a new version of the headset, called Pulse headset this October, maybe you might want to wait awhile. Here's an amazon link
I have the official Sony one and like it. there is a newer version that is nicer, though it is usually priced above your budget (currently $124.78). I haven't used the new ones, but I've heard nothing but good things about them.
Given they need a USB port to connect to something, they wouldn't work with the Quest. Unless you're talking about something else. Link please?
Edit: whoops, you answered the comment below mine.
I found them from digging around a bit, they're mentioned in this comment from about a year ago.
Apparently the vibration sensitivity can be easily increased to match the bass. wouldn't be perfect, but I think it could help.
Which headset, specifically, are you using? This will help us troubleshoot with you. Do you mean the Pulse Elite headset?
Have these. They're awesome. http://www.amazon.com/Edition-Wireless-Headset-PlayStation-3-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG Also had built in controllable bass.
Hello Redditors,
I recently ran into the $105 Sony Pulse Elite headphones which apparently has decent reviews and decent 7.1 VSS. I automatically got hooked and wanted to buy it, but sadly it doesn't work in 7.1 VSS mode on the Xbox One, only on the Playstation 4.
I then extended my search to look at anything that work on both in 7.1 VSS but also has a decent quality. Closest I found was the Turtle Beach 800X which is 3 times as expensive (which I can't afford). Also, I don't understand how that headphone is connected to the sound source.
So I have 2 question:
1) Any suggestions for headphones similar to Sony's Pulse Elite (in quality and price) that works on both, PS4 and X1?
2) How does the Turtle Beach 800X connect to the sound source? Is there a dongle that connects to the optical sound output? Does that make it universally able to play 7.1 VSS as long as the audio format supports so (regardless of whether I'm using my PS4, X1, laptop, TV, etc...)?
Thank you very much!
p.s. I'm not very informed with headphones and sound hardware in general. I do understand technology however.
You hit the nail on the head. I had to add a piece of foam to the top, it hurts after about an hour. Other than that, I can't recommend these enough!!! The ones made with the GTA V logo have a "special" mode that supposedly enhances game sound. They cost the same as the other ones so I bought them.
These are a bit pricey, but so worth every penny, http://www.amazon.com/Edition-Wireless-Headset-PlayStation-3-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG. I also own these and they still work great a few years later, http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Amplified-Universal-Headset-Playstation-3/dp/B00BDS415I/ref=dp_ob_title_vg. I would buy either again!!
I've heard great things about these http://www.amazon.com/Edition-Wireless-Headset-PlayStation-3-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG They will work on PS4.
Would Walmart match amazons current price? http://www.amazon.com/Pulse-Edition-Wireless-Stereo-Headset-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG
I just picked up the Pulse Elite Edition and it made The Last of Us even more enthralling. I browsed this subreddit and decided to get that one over the Regular Stereo Version as it just seemed to be that much better.
I included the amazon links so that you can do what I did: print it out and take it to Best Buy for a price match (yes, it worked).
Hell yea! Those are great headsets. I have the Sony Pulse Elite Editions. It literally is the best investment I've made for gaming: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Stereo-Headset-PlayStation-3-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG
I have the GTA 5 edition of those. They will scare the shit out of you if you forget you have rumble on, but they're pretty great. Here's a link if you want to check it out.
I have pulse and it's excellent and PS4 compatible:
I recommend the Sony Pulse Elite headset to a lot of people. It's pretty awesome and beats out almost every other headset in the price range.
Just got the Pulse Elite for X-Mas. Even though it's not compatible wirelessly yet, it's a damn good headset. Clear sound/voice and it has a great amount of bass. You can get them on Amazon for 120 right now: http://www.amazon.com/Pulse-Edition-Wireless-Stereo-Headset-63089006306200/dp/B0087OZ5FG
Once the firmware is released in January, you'll be able to use them wirelessly.
Edit: I see that /u/NotCurious mentioned the comfort level. I will mention that if you have large ears, the Pulse Elites might be tad bit uncomfortable. I'm on the smaller end and have proportionate ears so I didn't have any problem wearing them for a good 2-3 hours while playing AC IV and FIFA 14.
