I have one of those depression lights in my bedroom similar to this one. I also have this sun-emulating alarm clock that wakes me up with light. It also has a feature where you can set an amount of time (I usually do an hour) where the light will dimmer and yellower until it goes turns off. This helps it feel like an actual sunrise and sunset at the time I'm getting up and going to bed. The Philips light has one hundred (I think) light levels so it's always a smooth transition instead of the noticeable bump between brightness levels, and that helps it feel more natural, I think. I've seen some with only twenty or so steps between full brightness and off and it doesn't feel right.
My therapist also recommended some things that help with depression in general (in other words, things that aren't meant to target SAD only), such as eating a filling breakfast with protein—not sugar that will make you crash and feel more miserable—as often as I can and making sure I wake up at the same time every day. Additionally, some regular exercise (even going for a short walk every day) produces some serotonin to get you through.
Personally, I also have a glass of orange juice every morning in the dark months. It feels like liquid sunshine and liquid joy to me and honestly makes my whole day better. I don't really have it in the summer, but I need it in the winter.
