Imo Cameron's Alita adaptation is by far the best live action film from Hollywood I've seen (Avatar&Dragonball sucked; Speed Racer is my guilty pleasure; GitS and Netflix' Death Note were meh at best).

To be fair, I haven't read the manga and only seen the OVA from '93 (https://anidb.net/a147), so my opinion might be a bit biased on how much of the origin story was butchered.

My main criticism on Cameron's Alita would be the ending. Imo it was rushed a bit too much, but there's hope part II and III will fix some of the issues...if they ever get financed. ;_;

All in all I'd say you'll have to consider a bit of butchering here and there is necessary to appeal to a broader audience and be commercially successful.
