I have the same problem. There is no known solution, but a workaround I found is to open http://www.convertcase.net in another window, and whenever you type something, just copy and paste the letters you want smaller into the textbox and click the "lower case" button (I have no idea why it's called that). Then copy and paste the output back to where you were typing.
