Someone else earlier posted This which works similarly to OP's however it compares files contents (an actual byte-to-byte comparison regardless of filename) so that wouldn't be an issue. Symlinks in both Linux and on NTFS systems are indistinguishable from the "real" thing as far as 99.999999999% of software is concerned.
