I've done this with the liquibase-maven-plugin and hibernate. Liquibase can diff your entity updates and your schema. I don't trust it, personally. Could just be that I'm old. Other than that, I'm not really sure other than I know there are good looking modern Java applications. I'm not much of a GUI developer when it comes to Java, my experience with Java is more CLI-based.
