This is useful for most operations, but I will add that if you wish to have a necessarily complex naming scheme, you could try out Sherrod Computer's File Renamer Free or the Pro trial. Yes, their website is sketchy as hell.
I've got an image naming scheme for wallpapers that is pretty evil to deal with, but has nice results afterwards. Without this program I would be going crazy.
