Perhaps give Voxelands a try. It is free (both in terms of speech and beer), multi-platform, available in formats suitable for a number of different GNU/Linux distributions and has a very friendly little community. Another nice alternative is Freeminer. :)

Well... Y'know. This project actually came out of someone quite literally making a Minecraft-type thing as a test, and open-sourced it. It was well-received, and it gained developers and got to the point it is now... without ever really changing its name.
