Here is the quick overview.

1) Generated normal map using Laigter

2) Used this toon shader to make the lighting more dramatic

3) Then as a post process I used this palette shader to limit the palette.

My overall goal is a bit like the Lego movie. When they made that movie they said any of the scenes could have been built with real Legos. I want the final rendered result to be something you could draw as pixel art with a defined palette.

I accidentally turned off my custom lighting earlier and the difference astounded me, as I haven't seen what my game looks like without it for a while. The normal maps auto-generated by Laigter without much tweaking at all make such an improvement for little to no effort at all

Yeah, the unlight is what I tried earlier and had similar issues.

Some info about the pipeline:

• The basic pixel art was created in Aseprite, but can be made in every halfway decent graphics tool. Piskel is free to use and web based.
• It uses 32x32 px tiles. 1 tile represents 1 meter in Blender, so work from there and extrude the tiles in 1m steps till you have the tiles you need.
• There are two models, one for the frame with 3 faces and one for the door with 1 face. It's ridiculously low, a whole city scape wouldn't scartch the 1000 mark. The heavy lifting is done by lighting.
• Textures are set to nearest neighbour / closest interpolation.
• The textures are set up in a PBR workflow with diffuse, specular, roughness, AO and normal maps. The door just uses diffuse and normal.
• You can set up PBR maps for pixel art with a free tool called Laigter or paint them by hand using a normal map color matrix and a bit of abstract thinking. There are pros and cons to generating tools - you will always have to clean up the outer edges for unwanted bevels (you can see it in the example).
• You can use this pipeline in ever modern game engine, but some of them use inverted standards for normals or require extra fiddling for perfect pixel scaling.

I used Aseprite for creating the sprite, and laigter for the normal map. But as mentioned previously, it was fixed due to an overlooked setting when importing. My bad. But thanks for your response anyways!

Hey, if you want simple normal map generator, you could try a software i'm developing. It's very limited compared to SpriteIlluminator or Sprite DLight, but i'm working on it to add more features.
