That'll be great if it has a high frame rate since that makes it easier to see the mouse cursor move with little delay. Another way I stream the desktop to VR is by using the free version of the Mikogo desktop streaming app / service
It sends your desktop to Mikago's servers. Any person who knows your access code can use any browser to see your desktop. The paid version adds a password protection layer. Even though Mikago works over the Internet instead of a local network, it's faster for me than Screen Tasks. But there is still a slight delay between the time you move your cursor using your real mouse and the time you see it move in your headset. However, even with the delay, it's still possible to "work" in VR using Mikago. I can even copy and paste text. But it would be nice if there was little or no latency.
You may be right about the VLC capture not working since everything else works. Screen Tasks uses .NET classes to capture bitmaps which the code converts to JPEGs. That's one reason it doesn't need VLC. But there's overhead because of that capture/convert process so maybe the VLC method may speed things up.
I'll check the Switch thread and test the new Jar to see what happens.
