What is the crowd's opinion of Multi Theft Auto?

Someone suggested adding a multiplayer mode but was denied. I remember in college when multitheftauto was first released in the mid-2000's and wanted to set up a deathmatch in Vice City for my suite mates and myself (I wanted to play a deadly chef using the Leo Teal character). Sadly but unsurprisingly, it was buggy as hell when first released.

There's still an active Multi Theft Auto community and a working XP build, FYI. Mostly just Zombie Mod and Role play, but both are pretty fun.

Do you mean SA-MP (San Andreas Multiplayer) or MTA (Multi Theft Auto)? There is still a lot of people playing both of them. Personally I prefer playing SAMP at UIF-United Islands Freeroam.
