What is the crowd's opinion of OpenMeetings?

3cx has video conference and chat... might be a little heavy, and not free, just free ish but self hosted.

I believe rocketchat does video, I use it in house although I have not tried it myself.

I remember checking out riot a while back but haven't heard much about it in a long time.

Nur um sicher zu gehen: ich hab nix gegen Open Source ;)

1. Das ist allerdings ja das Problem, um das wir uns drehen: es sind nicht nur mal eben kurz höhere Kosten am Anfang: du musst entweder selber hosten, und dafür vernünftige Infrastruktur haben (Server, Anbindung...) genauso wie Personen, die das können (Lehrer in ihrer Freizeit aktuell), oder hosten lassen, und dann ist es wieder eine Blackbox, für die man Geld bezahlt.

2. Ja naja. Das Viele-Augen-Prinzip ist zwar im Großen und Ganzen richtig, aber niemand in einer Schule oder der Regierung macht ein Code-Audit. Damit ist das nur ein theoretischer Vorteil. Und selbst wenn: kompiliert man selber, oder verteilt man signierte Binaries an die Schulen? An die Schüler, die Programme installieren müssen? Firewalls gibt es übrigens auch in nicht Open Source ;)

Ganz davon abgesehen: bei mir auf dem Arbeitslaptop ist Teams wg der Performance teilweise fast unrbauchbar, aber zumindest immer noch bedienbar von UI und UX her, so generell. Was einem aber zB unter https://openmeetings.apache.org/ so geboten wird... das kann man keinem Schüler oder Lehrer zumuten.

Bigbluebutton wäre da schon deutlich angenehmer, ist aber auch kein Rundum-Sorglos-Paket. Wenn ich mir das Moodle anschaue, was meine Freundin benutzen muss... da geht auch noch einiges. Zumindest sind damit aber schon mal Bausteine vorhanden, das sehe ich als positiv. Aber nur Open Source als Heilmittel per se zu sehen, halte ich für verkürzt.

Apache's OpenMeetings is a totally free and open source solution that I found. https://openmeetings.apache.org/

It just requires somebody familiar with how to install and run it, and you can host such meetings of moderate size yourself without any third parties, bandwidth permitting.

Eele rodando em um server Debian7 na época cria a sala de reunião insere os participante e já era tem o que você precisa e é livre da uma olhada.

I've installed and tested BBB and also another similar project, https://openmeetings.apache.org They both do offer some impressive functionality.

The disadvantage of both of them is that they are ridiculously complicated to install, and they're a perfect example of The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers, except that they don't even offer a container image. :) In other words, the installations consists of an insane hodgepodge of randomly installed deb files pulled in from random servers via many dozens of copy/pasted curl / wget / dpkg -icommands, and that's assuming you can actually find non-archaic instructions for your distro. And then upgrade time comes around....and once again it's time to repeat that same nasty process except this time you'll have to worry about version conflicts. Or if you're sane just destroy the VM and start all over again from scratch. Awful, awful, awful disaster for administration.
