PageDefrag can analyses your system paging files and registry hive files for fragmentation and have them defragmented upon reboot. This is an area that can't be touched while Windows is running and is typically ignored by defragging tools.

PageDefrag, first thing. Set the swap file to 2x the amount of RAM (fixed), then run pagedefrag to make that contiguous. Cuts down on thrashing, improves performance.

What I would do...

1. Run AdAware and/or Spybot to remove any crap malware that's slowing you down
2. Remove any old device drivers or auto-starts that you don't need any more
3. Install as much RAM as the unit can take, if that's an option
4. Set your pagefile size to twice the size of your installed RAM, both Min and Max. That way you have a statically sized pagefile
5. Download, install and run PageDfrg from Microsoft to defrag the pagefile and registry hives. This can reduce thrashing of the hard drive when you're paging, which really slows the system down
6. Optimize your hard drive

Or if you're in the mood for it, do a whole re-format and re-install of the OS. Immediately do #4 and #5 above if you do this.
