Former is Antivirus latter is Antimalware, you need both if you want to cover your system well enough with the rest being browser level with ublock origin and noscript.

It can work in some cases but it's more about the user than just the software really.

Besides just using antivirus to give the basic PC protection, I do encourage having an additional layer such as Application Whitelisting/Application Control. Yes, the term isn't that common but has been around for many years. Basically, blocking applications that are not in the whitelist and this may sounds complicated to do because it's normally found in enterprise instead of home use. Therefore, I recommend SecureAPlus that makes Application Whitelisting easy for home users. Take for instance, when the application launch without your permission, you will be notified and that you will be giving diagnosis whether to block or unblock. It's that simple and users do not have to build their whitelist because the building of whitelist starts straight after installation (may take a while but it's gonna be all worth it).
