I'm seeing a minor new trend in indies: Pan out the camera until you barely see the character (Below, Tokyo 42). I don't really like it. It looks stylish but I don't get it from a design point of view. It makes me squint my eyes at a few pixels in the middle while 95% of the screen remains background deco with no impact on gameplay whatsoever. It's basically wasted space for a minor stylistic gimmick.
