Don't retrofit. It isn't worth the hassle.
For this kind of situation, I really like websitebaker. It's one of the easier systems to convert an HTML / CSS design to a CMS format. Essentially you build an empty template for your page and put in a few PHP function calls to get the content where you want it to go. It's still going to take some tweaking, but it's pretty easy to use.
